Finding Your Compass

Finding Your Compass

Have you ever experienced a moment when you realize your brain isn’t functioning the way it used to? I’ve felt this strongly over the past few years, and most recently, I’m still working through the effects of stress and trauma. While Reiki has been incredibly beneficial for me (of course!), I recognized that I needed more than my usual Reiki approach. I noticed changes in my cognitive abilities that concerned me: poor sleep, difficulty focusing, and an inability to engage in the “deep work” that once defined my life. If you’ve felt scattered, reactive, or stuck in firefighting mode, you might relate to this. I’ve come to understand that I’m in a healing phase, addressing deeper issues—this is my PHD mode!

Are you battling AADD (Acquired Attention Deficit Disorder)? I jokingly refer to it as AADD—not the clinical definition, but rather the modern version characterized by multitasking overload, constant notifications, and a brain that feels perpetually “on.” This was my previous way of life, and now I’m facing challenges with focus and creativity, along with the ability to think deeply, which can be quite frightening. The reality is, we need our brains fully engaged in today’s world. I hadn’t realized that my brain required R, R, & R (rest, relaxation, and Reiki) until life forced me to reconsider and rewire deep-seated issues like dopamine addictions, unhealthy habits, and the challenging work of retraining my brain.

Millions of individuals with important contributions to make struggle with brain fog, lack of focus, and superficial work. This isn’t just a personal issue; it’s a critical problem that could threaten the progress of our society as we face significant challenges that need addressing for our evolution.

A Deep Dive into Brain Rehabilitation
I emphasize that it’s not just about doing your Reiki practices; it requires hard work. You need to manage your distractions, starting with your phone, which is probably the simplest aspect. Additionally, you must address the deeper issues I mentioned earlier. What helped me was the reminder that whatever you experience is a process of clearing that energy.

  • I read books like “Stolen Focus” by Johann Hari. The author shares his story of going into full monk mode for three months, which reminded me of Dr. Usui’s story. The key takeaway for me was the importance of prioritizing a flow state.
  • Starting the Day with Flow. Flow occurs when you become so immersed in a meaningful task that the outside world fades away. To achieve this, start with a clear, challenging goal, and your entire day can shift. Engaging in a self-Reiki practice can be a challenge, especially when trying to maintain it for an hour each morning. I utilized my daily transformational Reiki Journal to read centering thoughts and seek inner guidance throughout my self-practice. This process helped my brain focus and provided direction, allowing me to achieve deep work that positively transformed my day. I realized that some of my actions drained my energy, prompting me to focus on activities that would replenish it. The creative flow of my practices began to accomplish just that, reinforcing the value of my daily self-practice on multiple levels of awareness. Other flow activities I enjoy in the morning include yoga flow, breathwork, and creative activities like playing the piano. Engaging in flow helps facilitate the communication of energy between the brain and body. To evaluate my experience, I measured how long I could sustain my focus and assessed the quality of my flow—whether it was short and quick or relaxed and grounded. Others I would sit quietly in mediation in nature to listen to sounds of the ocean, birds, breezes, do a walking meditation to connect my eyes to colors, shapes, close and far, smell different scent in the air, feel the air or water on my skin, open my mouth to taste the nectar of the air, water, or food. All is directing connection and how long could I sustain that outside myself before my inner thoughts would awaken to distract me. And when that occurs I use my precepts and simply place my hand on myself and pour vibrant energy to clear what ever it is that is trying to steal my presence away from me in that moment, not to ignore it but in a way of is it that important to take me away and do I have the energy to give it away at this moment. Clear consenting choice.
  • Prioritize Deep Work Over Firefighting. Firefighting can be likened to the urgent task of putting out fires through problem-solving. However, there is great value in engaging in critical, deep work that is proactive, focusing on fire prevention rather than fire suppression. This approach shifts your mindset from seeing everything as chaotic emergencies that need immediate attention to a more organized perspective. It can lead to an increased sense of freedom, as it feels like all the other details fall into place. Ultimately, it may simply be the comfort in knowing you’ve done your best, which allows you the freedom to be present and pursue whatever else you wish for the rest of the day.
  • Sleep Like Your Brain Depends on it (Because it Does): My sleep quality decreases as my attention span wanes. I was unsure whether my lack of sleep was causing my attention issues or vice versa, but I knew I needed to address both together. I suspect that many people, including myself, experience some degree of nervous system dysregulation. Most of you are aware that Reiki can have calming effects, particularly when practiced before bedtime to promote a peaceful night’s sleep. During a Reiki session, you may experience feelings of restlessness that can be quite uncomfortable until you finish the practice. It’s important to understand that the body cannot relax if the mind is unsettled; trying to sleep while feeling the chaos and overstimulation in your body is nearly impossible. Imagine the benefits of consistently achieving restful sleep if you worked to calm your attention throughout the day and made a conscious effort to soothe yourself immediately when you feel overwhelmed by what I’ve termed “AADD” at its worst.
  • The Safety Focus Connection: Here’s something intriguing: your ability to focus is closely linked to your sense of safety. Childhood traumas, financial stress, and family illness can all impact your attention span in the present, even if those experiences occurred years ago or not long ago. This is where Reiki can be significantly life-changing. It helps clear the tension and stress from your past that affects you in the present moment, all while using spiritual principles. By bringing attention to this inner chaos, you can start to engage in self-reflection about love, forgiveness, and gratitude for your past experiences. This inner dialogue can transform your life by creating harmony or allowing you to let go and make room for new opportunities. This transformation can affect you mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Improving your focus can also enhance your sleep quality, as feeling securely connected to your inner self reduces distractions. By reclaiming your power, essence, and energy, you learn that nothing is more important than the present moment. You won’t drift away; instead, you’ll be able to remain unapologetically focused, feeling, listening, and being aware of everything around you with compassion and understanding. Remember, nothing is personal; it’s about being fully aware and challenging yourself to see how long you can maintain focused attention in a safe space. You are under no obligation to pay attention to everything—only what is essential. Your Reiki practice or healing sessions allow you to identify and clear the non-essential, making your day seamless without disruptions. Your sleep patterns will reflect this, and you will be in control of your brain power. It’s simply working for you.

The Power of Rewriting Patterns
Reiki energy works wonders for overcoming emotional and mental hurdles, primarily by amplifying your efforts toward incremental behavior changes.

These shifts have restored my mornings, evenings, and days, and most importantly, my mental clarity. You often hear me say, “Reiki helps you get out of your own way.” While not everything may get done, the right things do, and that feels far better than any To-Do list ever could.

Are you ready to reclaim your mind by giving it what it needs? Start small with Reiki self-practice or a series of Reiki sessions. If you’re looking for a more comprehensive approach, consider the 108-day Reiki Companion Journal, as I did.
