The Incredible Paulk Documentary

The Resilience of the Human Spirit

We grieve what was. We adapt to what is. And somehow, we continue forward.

Nearly 10 or 11 years ago, Aaron Paulk came into my life as a Reiki student, during the early years of my journey as a Reiki Master and teacher. Little did I know how deeply his journey would continue to inspire me and remind me why I chose to teach Reiki.

Aaron lives with a degenerative vision condition that has required him to continually adapt to the world around him. What inspires me most is how he has found his own unique ways to live fully, embracing his passion for surfing, traveling, and experiencing life. Today, he is a gold medalist and competitive adaptive surfer, continuing to discover what is possible.

Recently, I watched this beautiful documentary about his journey that is being played at film festivals around the world, filmed before and after the devastating Lahaina fires. The imagery captures the beauty and spirit of a community forever changed. Watching it now brings a tenderness for what once was, what has been lost, and the resilience of those finding their way adapting to change moving forward.

What struck me was the connection between these two very different journeys.

For Aaron, adaptive surfing has become more than an accomplishment. It’s a living expression of his ability to adapt, find joy, and embrace life’s possibilities. For Lahaina, adaptation is unfolding through grief, rebuilding, and discovering what moving forward can look like.

Their circumstances are very different, yet both reflect something deeply human.

We grieve what once was. We adapt to what is. And somehow, we continue forward.

Not because the challenges disappear or we forget what was lost, but because life continues to invite us to discover and accept new ways of being.

This is so much of what Reiki means to me.

Reiki doesn’t promise a life without challenges, loss, or uncertainty. It offers us a practice of returning to ourselves, reconnecting with our inner strength, and finding our way through life’s changing circumstances towards acceptance and freedom.

One of the deepest reasons I chose Reiki mastery was to empower others with a practice they could make their own and carry throughout their lives.

Aaron continues his Reiki practice today, and witnessing his journey has been such a gift. What I’ve learned is that teaching is never a one-way exchange. Aaron has touched and inspired my life just as much as I may have touched his. Thank you Aaron for being my teacher.

This is why I teach Reiki. This is why I chose mastery.

Not to change someone’s journey, but to offer a practice that supports them in meeting life with greater connection, presence, and trust in themselves.

I’m incredibly proud of Aaron and grateful to share this beautiful glimpse into his life and the resilience of the human spirit.
